Clinical Study Results
NightWatch+ was developed by epilepsy centers in the Netherlands (Kempenhaeghe and SEIN) in collaboration with patient associations, UMC Utrecht and TU/Eindhoven.
A clinical study conducted in 2017 and 2018 shows that 9 out of 10 clinically urgent nightly seizures can be registered by using NightWatch.

Clinical Study Results
In the study, one group of 34 patients who had more than one clinically urgent nightly seizure per month wore the NightWatch sensor for three months, measuring heart rate (photoplethysmography) and motion (3-D accelerometry).
All the seizures were classified using video.
Over a total period of 1826 nights 809 major seizures were detected. Major seizures include tonic-clonic seizures, tonic seizures longer than 30 seconds, and hyperkinetic and clustered myoclonic seizures.
Compared with the control group, which used a popular bed mat, the bed mat detected 3 out of 10 major seizures while NightWatch detected 9 out of 10.
The attending caregivers participated in the questionnaire and indicated that NightWatch reacts sooner when urgent help had to be offered, is easy to use, and gives more rest/ freedom compared to the control group.
NightWatch+ Detects:
- Adults: 86% median (95% CI: 71%-93%) for Nocturnal Epileptic Motor seizures and 96% median (95% CI: 80%-100%) for tonic-clonic seizures

Epileptic Seizures
Worldwide more than 50 million people suffer from epilepsy. About 30% find no relief from epileptic seizures despite taking medication. Nightly seizures can be particularly dangerous to one‘s health.
This condition has a major impact for patients as well as for their environment. It poses risks of accidents and premature death and has social and societal consequences.




The NightWatch+ fits all caregiving systems
The NightWatch+ system consists of an sensor that is worn on the upper arm by the user during sleep. Sensors in the sensormeasure changes in heart rate and motion.
Smart algorithms ensure that possible clinically urgent seizures are detected and communicated (via a wireless DECT signal) to the alarm station, which can be as far as 15 meters from the patient – for example in the parents‘ bedroom.

Nurse call system
The alarm station can be connected to any caregiving call system so that possible clinically urgent seizures can be immediately communicated to the nursing professional.
Precise and versatile
NightWatch+ can detect various types of seizures with a high level of precision, including:
- Friendly station interface: Easy for the user to read notifications on the alarm station, friendly LED light colours to allow faster reading of device status.
- Alarms: The alarm sounds have been updated to comply with the latest European standard for medical alarms.
- The colours of the lights have changed. Notifications about the device status are now blue, technical alarms are orange, and only the epilepsy alarm is red.
- Alarm sounds have been changed to comply with the latest medical alert standards.
- The alarm sound remains audible even at the lowest volume setting, unless in Distributed Alarm System (DAS) mode (see below).
- Alarms can be muted and un-muted.
- Epilepsy alarms remain active until acknowledged by the caregiver at the alarm station by pressing a button, unless in DAS mode (see below).
- Alarm on loss of Power: The alarm station sounds an alarm on loss of power, due to e.g. a power failure.
- Comfortable: Comfortable strap material ideal for prolonged use. An initial set of comfort plasters for greater wearing comfort for people with sensitive skin is included as standard.
- Fully functional NightWatch Portal: The NightWatch Portal, in which the NightWatch+'s epileptic seizure frequency can be viewed, has an easy to use friendly user interface.
- Certified according to the highest standards: NightWatch+ is the first epilepsy alarm in Europe to be certified as a class IIa medical device by a notified body according to the latest EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) 2017/745.
- Improved connection to nurse-call systems and medical alarm systems:
- NightWatch+ supports integration with Medical Distributed Alarm Systems (DAS) via the RJ-45 port (internet cable) and complies with the latest alarm standard for medical devices (IEC 60601-1-8), ensuring seamless and secure alarm distribution. NightWatch + alarms if the connection to the DAS server is lost.
- Connectivity via RJ-11 (telephone cable) remains available only in the pro version, which can only be sold to professional buyers. The relay is now configured normally-closed by default. You can no longer log into Nightwatch+ to change settings.
